Does On Point Work? PDF Print E-mail

We place great value on stringent program evaluation not only to assess On Point’s effectiveness, but to grow and change to better meet the needs of teens.  We want evaluation to spark a community conversation about how all of us – parents, organizations, businesses, schools, houses of worship, and government – can play a vital role in building kids’ strengths.

On Point recently received its evaluation data for the 2008-2009 schoolyear, analyzed by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.  In 2008-2009, On Point taught nearly 15,000 area students through the five-day Think On Point curriculum and mentored over 700 committed students weekly through Life On Point.  The results?

• 86.5% of teens report that after having the Think On Point program, they can say “NO” to sex before marriage.
• 87.2% of Think On Point students also stated that they can avoid alcohol and drug use.
• 82.3% of participants in Life On Point reported that they were abstinent throughout the schoolyear; of those who had not been abstinent, 75% reported returning to an abstinent lifestyle.
• Life On Point members also report increased school attendance, better grades, and less involvement in substance abuse and violence.

It is also worth mentioning that since 1991 (the year in which On Point began working in area schools), the pregnancy rate in Hamilton County decreased from 58.5 to 15.8 in 2007 (per 1,000 teenage girls).  This 72% decline is the product of a committed community; we're excited to be one of the leading catalysts for this positive change!
